Revisiting Ron Howard’s 1994 Film The Paper: A Star-Studded Comedy-Drama About Journalism and Deadlines

Story by Mitchell Smith

Today I’m taking a look at the 1994 film The Paper. This is such a great film with a great group of actors. This American comedy-drama film is directed by Ron Howard, centered around the high-pressure environment of a fictional New York City tabloid, the New York Sun. Henry Hackett played by Michael Keaton, is the city editor of the New York Sun. He is an overworked journalist who struggles to maintain a balance between work and home life. Hackett is caught in the middle of a major story about a murder that two young men, whom the police have hastily accused, claim they did not commit.

The supporting cast features Glenn Close as Alicia Clark, Robert Duvall as Bernie White, Randy Quaid as Michael McDougal, and Marisa Tomei plays Hackett’s wife, Martha. Jason Alexander and Catharine O’Hara also have minor rolls and Ron Howard’s wife Cheryl appears in a scene as well. Overall this movie still holds up today even though most of the printing presses have shut down we still have media and stories on line and deadlines to meet. If you have never watched this one make sure to check it out. Have a great week everyone.
